SCIENCE FICTION PORTAL & More!

Mom Still Doesn't Want You To Play With Your Food
by Kelly Hoffman

I recently discovered the candy action figures from Marvel hanging on the peg hooks of the local Wal-Mart’s toy aisles. Reading the package thought it was a very interesting concept so I picked up my favorite figure and flavor – Spider-man.

Each figure is articulated in five places [head, arms, waist and control stick]. These are recommended for ages 6 and up. This is probably due to the small candy parts. But it could also be because this concept could convince smaller kids to try to eat their action figures.

The control stick doubles as a display stand and lollipop stick. It is articulated in two places so you can display your figure before eating it. Be sure not to eat the control stick as the instructions point out.

Dynatech Action Inc., a Canadian company, makes them. The slogan is; ‘Now You Can Play With Your Food’. Well that statement is not entirely accurate. First, if a person were to display the candy outside the package for too long you really would not want to eat it. Second, the candy is already dissolving in the packaging so it is already too sticky to even build the figure let alone play with it. Dynatech Action should really head back to the kitchen on this one and reformulate the recipe for the hard candy. The vintage hard candy lollipops we all got as kids around Christmas would be the perfect hard candy recipe for them to use. I don’t ever recall those getting sticky and gooey even by Easter.

The package also tells us, ‘Collect them all’. As I just explained one would not want to actually collect these without actually eating them at some point. And since they come out of the package in a less then edible form this is really not recommended. An MIP [mint in package] collector will truly want to stay away form these figures.

The taste of the candy is not too bad, if you can get past the sticky, gooey melted exterior. Kids shouldn’t’ have any trouble with it. Adults with more refined taste buds will not enjoy this even if they have a sweet tooth.

These edible actions figures are available in four different styles and flavors; Spider-man Slingin’ Strawberry, Thing Rockin’ Orange, Hulk Smashing Sour Apple and Wolverine Banana X. Each costs about $3.50 retail, but definitely not worth it. Time to go back to the drawing board on these and come back with a hard candy that can stand up to the product ideal. Or even start over with a gummy candy instead of the lollipop idea.

Not at all what you would expect after visiting their website. This was definitely an idea that looks a lot better on paper [or in this case the web] than it does in reality.

From the company's website: “Edibles” are candy action figures with real movable parts. Using a patented process, “Edibles” have four articulating joints that let kids pose their characters. With many exciting licensed characters (Marvel Heroes) to collect and eat, kids will never get enough. “Edibles” are great tasting and will explode with action-packed flavour. “Edibles” combine two things kids love, TOYS and CANDY.
