art of the brickNo Starch publishing has put out some really nice LEGO® based books, both instructional and coffee table books. While this book falls into the later category it is far from just a coffee table book full of pretty pictures (not that there is anything wrong with that). Don’t get me wrong the photos in the book are the main feature and give us an excellent look at Nathan Sawaya’s LEGO art, but goes far beyond that.

You might ask yourself why do I need this book, I have already seen all of Nathan’s work online. The answer is simple. Nathan tells us, in his own words, what inspired the art work, how he got started and his thoughts before and after he makes his creations. He even goes into the less than warm reception by the company that manufactures his art medium (that’s right I mean LEGO). They just couldn’t quite grasp the concept of his art.

This book is the perfect companion to the travelling exhibit (now in Philadelphia). Especially if you can’t make the exhibit (and this is an art exhibit not a toy show — just making sure we are all clear on that point).

So go plunk down your hard earn cash and get yourself a copy of The Art of the Brick: A Life in LEGO by Nathan Sawaya.
